 | With the release date of Operation Flashpoint 2 colliding with the release of Modern Warfare 2, I can’t help but think of this as a clash between camps: simmers vs. twitch gamers. I’ve often thought of hardcore “simming” as an obsession-based gaming habit. On its face, a simmer is someone who seeks immersion by way of absolute belief; re-creating every possible of the real world. You’ll find them on forums reciting “realism” as if it were a divine incantation. I’ve known simmers to stop at no length to squeeze one more drop of realism out of a game, spending 4 figures on peripherals, dedicating a room in their house for simming, or spending hours in a day researching minutia. But over the years, simmers have begun to strike me as a group of masochists, hell-bent on a cerebral engagement so complex, that they ignore common sense of the real world. Some simmers have me convinced that they would gladly put a .45 round in their shoulder while gaming to simulate getting tagged by an enemy.
So with that in mind, Codemasters has audaciously defied the FPS sim community by offering a sequel of their poster-child without the staunch dedication to Realism that simmers thrive on. Why? It’s just that, well, it’s a game and they feel that they had to fudge a few things for the sake of… this is very difficult for me… “fun”?
Does it all come together? Let’s have a look. If you’re a WM’er… how faggy is this? Peep it.
